About

Ghardaïa market square called “Azghar Ougharme” which means outside the city, is located on the southwestern outskirts of the Ksar. Once frequented by caravan traders from distant territories, this place still remains to this day the largest and most dynamic market in the entire region. This market square was founded around 1884. Rectangular in shape with a surface area of approximately 3,400 m2, this square is surrounded by an arcade gallery of different shapes and sizes, under which shops and small businesses open. The alleys leading to the market square have an economic role in their part closest to the souk. In the past, each type of commercial activity was located in a delimited sector and there was the street of vegetables, the street of grocers, the street of tailors, that of embroiderers, etc., while the square was open to the sale of products from outside such as salt, spices, wheat, wool, livestock, etc. ا
