The New Mosque or (New Mosque) is one of the oldest mosques in the Algerian capital, located in Martyrs' Square (Bab El Bahr), it was built in the Ottoman period during the reign of the Dey Mustafa Pasha in 1660, by the architect Hajj Habib in a style that mixes the Byzantine and Ottoman styles and was a mosque of the Hanafi school throughout the Ottoman period. The building is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The new mosque is located in the Lower Kasbah in Martyrs' Square in Algiers, overlooking the sea, and was formerly known as the 'El Hawatin' mosque in relation to the place where it is located, known to the general public as 'La Bichre' or 'Samaka', where fish are caught and sold fresh.
