About
The Church of the Sacred Heart is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in the city of Algiers. The construction of the cathedral was completed in 1956, becoming the incubator cathedral for the Diocese of Algiers after St. Philip's Cathedral was transformed into the Ketchoua Mosque.
The construction of the church began with Bishop Lynaud’s desire to build a church in the capital in 1944. The church became a cathedral in December 1962, and was consecrated in 1963. The building was designed by Paul Herby and Jean Le Coutier, along with engineer Rene Sergier. The designers inspired the cathedral's architecture from the Gospel of John.
At the entrance to the church, there is a small organ that was donated by the parishioners of the town of Boufarik, and it faces a mosaic dating back to the year 324, which is a remnant of the first Roman cathedral in the town of Chlef. The cathedral contains the relics of some African saints.
